Driving on the motorway means following specific rules, for your safety and that of others. This guide recalls the essential rules to know before you take the toll road.
Speed and distances
The maximum speed allowed on motorways in Morocco is generally 120 km/h, reduced in rain or poor visibility (often 100 km/h). Keep safe following distances and adapt your pace to conditions.
Traffic rules
- Keep right; use the left lane only to overtake.
- Never use the hard shoulder to drive or overtake.
- Signal your lane changes and check your blind spots.
- U-turns and reversing are strictly forbidden.
If something goes wrong
- Pull onto the hard shoulder with hazard lights on.
- Set out the warning triangle and put on the high-visibility vest.
- Move occupants behind the safety barrier.
- Use an emergency call point or search for the official assistance number.
The hard shoulder is reserved for forced stops. Driving on it is dangerous and penalised.
Mandatory equipment
A high-visibility vest and a warning triangle must be on board. Check the condition of tyres, brakes and fluid levels before a long trip.
